Benito Hoover

Brave New World

Benito Hoover is a cheerful acquaintance of Bernard Marx whose ready friendliness and faith in soma embody the World State’s preference for smoothing away discomfort. In a brief encounter on a rooftop, his well-meant offer of a dose only sharpens his contrast with Bernard: Benito sees glumness as something to treat, while Bernard refuses the remedy and leaves.

Identity and Temperament

Benito is described as chubby and red-faced, with a beaming manner and a reputation for being exceptionally good-natured. The narrator notes that people say he could have got through life without ever taking soma; the irritability and bad moods for which others need holidays do not seem to affect him. For Benito, reality is invariably sunny. This description makes his good humor more than a passing expression: it is his defining way of meeting the world.

Encounter with Bernard Marx

After Lenina Crowne has left the roof, Benito calls out that she is pretty, then adds that she is pneumatic. He notices Bernard’s glum expression and immediately offers him soma, producing a phial from his trouser pocket and invoking the familiar promise that one cubic centimetre cures ten gloomy sentiments. His response is sincere and practical within the norms he inhabits: unhappiness appears to him as a condition that can be promptly relieved.

Bernard suddenly turns and rushes away before Benito can finish. The exchange therefore ends not in the reassurance Benito intends but in a sharp contrast between the two men: Benito offers a conventional remedy, while Bernard rejects the social ease it represents without explaining himself.

Interpretation and Narrative Role

Left behind, Benito wonders what could be wrong with Bernard. He decides that the rumor about alcohol having been put into Bernard’s blood-surrogate must be true and supposes it has affected Bernard’s brain. His explanation reveals the limits of his understanding: rather than consider Bernard’s distress on its own terms, he makes it evidence of a biological defect, using the society’s account of Bernard to make an unfamiliar reaction intelligible.

Benito then puts away the soma phial, takes out sex-hormone chewing-gum, and walks toward the hangars, still ruminating. The shift from one readily available chemical aid to another closes the scene on the everyday material supports of World State comfort. Benito is not shown as malicious; his warmth is genuine. Yet his inability to imagine a response to unhappiness beyond diagnosis and treatment makes him an effective foil to Bernard’s alienation.
